Input Tax Credit (ITC) is one of the biggest benefits of GST — but claiming it correctly requires careful reconciliation between your purchase records and the data available on the GST portal. Getting this wrong can mean losing legitimate credits or receiving notices from the department.

What Is ITC Reconciliation?

ITC reconciliation is the process of matching the input tax credit you have claimed in your GSTR-3B with the credit available in your GSTR-2B (auto-generated from your suppliers' GSTR-1 filings). Any mismatch means you are either claiming more than you are entitled to, or missing credits you could rightfully claim.

Step-by-Step Reconciliation Process

  1. Download GSTR-2B — log in to the GST portal and download the GSTR-2B for the relevant period. This shows all credits available to you based on your suppliers' filings.
  2. Export your purchase register — generate a report of all purchases from your accounting software (Tally, Zoho Books, etc.) for the same period.
  3. Match invoice-by-invoice — compare each purchase invoice in your books against the corresponding entry in GSTR-2B. Check GSTIN, invoice number, date, taxable value, and tax amounts.
  4. Identify mismatches — common issues include invoices not uploaded by suppliers, wrong GSTIN, incorrect tax amounts, and duplicate entries.
  5. Follow up with suppliers — for invoices missing in GSTR-2B, contact the supplier and request them to file or correct their GSTR-1.
  6. Adjust your GSTR-3B — only claim ITC that is reflected in GSTR-2B. Excess claims will be flagged and may result in interest and penalties.

Common ITC Reconciliation Issues

  • Supplier has not filed GSTR-1 — your credit will not appear in GSTR-2B until they do
  • Invoice number mismatch — different formats (INV-001 vs INV/001) cause matching failures
  • Credit notes not reflected — returns and credit notes must also be reconciled
  • Reverse charge entries — RCM transactions need separate handling in reconciliation
